Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in Central, Mallee, South West, Northern Country, North Central, Wimmera and parts of East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:19 pm Friday, 22 September 2017.
Northerly winds are expected to strengthen on Saturday ahead of a cold front, expected over far western Victoria around midday Saturday. The cold front will move rapidly eastwards, reaching eastern Victoria Saturday night.
DAMAGING WINDS, northerlies averaging 40 to 50 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100km/h are expected to develop later Saturday morning, mainly about elevated areas.
Winds are expected to increase immediately ahead of the cold front. Westerlies of 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected throughout the warning area with and behind the cold front, particularly with any shower or thunderstorm activity where wind gusts may reach 110 km/h.
Winds are expected to ease on Saturday night, a few hours behind the change.
Locations which may be affected include Mildura, Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEST Saturday.
